Real Talk: Navigating the First 48 Hours

The transition into Ramadan is never a “total shock-free” system, even with the best intentions. As I step into my second year of observing this holy month, Day 1 and Day 2 served as a powerful reminder that while “Islam is ease,” the human body and mind need time to catch up with the spirit.

Here is the honest breakdown of my first two days and the lessons I’m carrying forward.

Day 1: The Reality Check

I started Day 1 with high energy, waking up at 04:00 AM. However, I quickly learned that my Suhoor strategy was lacking. By 09:00 AM, the realization hit: I hadn’t rehydrated sufficiently or eaten enough slow-energy foods to sustain the day.

  • The 13:00 Slump: My focus began to fade significantly by early afternoon.
  • Listening to the Body: I made the call to leave the office at 14:00 PM for a nap. While a midday nap might not be the standard goal, the manual reminds us that we shouldn’t risk our health.
  • Community Support: Ending the day at the mosque was the turning point. As I’ve mentioned before, finding a support network is vital for first-timers; the community welcomed me and helped me find my rhythm with the prayers.

Day 2: Clarity and Objectives

Day 2 felt like a different world. I felt more physically prepared, but the spiritual breakthrough happened during Jummah.

The discussion focused on a core principle from my manual: Niyyah (Intention). The message was clear—if we don’t have our objectives written down, we will forget them. It isn’t enough to just “not eat”; you have to define your “Why” to keep you grounded when that 3:00 PM slump eventually hits.

My Objectives for this Ramadan

Taking the advice from Jummah to heart, I am refining my focus for the rest of the month:

  1. Consistency over Intensity: Sticking to the “1% Rule” to avoid burnout by day five.
  2. Emotional Health: Using the stillness of the month to regain the “clarity of thought” I experienced last year.
  3. Refining the Routine: perfecting my Suhoor Smoothie (Option 1 with dates and ProNutro) to ensure Day 1’s dehydration doesn’t happen again.

A note to my followers: If you’re struggling in these first few days, remember that the first 3-4 days are often the most difficult. Stick with it, forgive yourself for the “slumps,” and focus on your intent.
